Leave the desk, sit down somewhere else to eat, and give the meal your attention rather than your inbox. Borrow the spirit of the Italian pausa pranzo: lunch as a real pause in the day, ideally shared, rather than fuel taken over a keyboard. Put it in the calendar, keep it simple and let it be a habit rather than a project.

There is a type of lunch most office workers know well: a sandwich eaten over the keyboard, one hand on the mouse, crumbs in the keys, and by two o'clock no memory of having eaten at all. It technically counts as lunch. It does not count as a break.

## The pausa pranzo as a model

In Italian, the lunch break is the *pausa pranzo*, and the phrase carries a certain idea: lunch as a proper pause, a meal you sit down for, often with other people, before the afternoon begins. Real working days vary, of course, and a *panino* eaten at a bar counter is lunch too. But the ideal is worth borrowing: the break is a break.

## Leave the desk

The most important step is physical. Get up and go somewhere else, even if it is only the kitchen, a bench outside or a café round the corner. Eating in the same chair where you work keeps you halfway in work mode. Changing the place changes the mood.

If you work from home, the same applies, perhaps more so. Close the laptop, move to another room or the balcony, and do not take the phone to the table.

## Sit down to eat

Eating standing up, walking or scrolling all have a way of making a meal disappear. Sitting down at a table, with a plate rather than packaging if you can, makes it a meal. Look at what you are eating. Taste it. It sounds almost too simple, but it is the difference between lunch and refuelling.

What you eat is up to you: leftovers, a salad, a sandwich from the bakery, soup from a flask. We have practical ideas in [the packed lunch](https://zestasy.com/wiki/packed-lunch/).

## Share it when you can

Lunch with colleagues, a friend nearby or a neighbour working from home changes the whole break. Conversation about anything other than work is a reset in its own right. Even once a week makes a difference to how the week feels.

If you prefer to eat alone, that is a fine pause too. A book, a window and a quiet half hour is a perfectly civilised lunch.

## Protect the time

- **Put it in the calendar.** A recurring block, so meetings land around it rather than on it.
- **Set a rough start time.** Lunch that waits until "when this is done" often never happens.
- **Tell people.** "I'm stepping out for lunch, back at two" is a normal, adult sentence.
- **Accept the odd exception.** Some days will go wrong. One crowded day doesn't break the habit.

## Add a bit of movement

A short walk after eating, to the end of the street and back, or a loop of the park, makes the break feel longer and gets you some daylight. It is a nice habit, not a requirement. We look at fitting more of that into a working day in [movement with a desk job](https://zestasy.com/movement/movement-with-a-desk-job/).

## Don't make it a project

The point is not a perfect, Instagram-ready lunch. It is simply a real pause in the middle of the day. Twenty unhurried minutes away from the desk is better than an hour you feel obliged to optimise.

## FAQ

### What if your workplace culture is to eat at your desk?
Start quietly. Step out a couple of times a week and see whether anyone even notices. Often others are glad of an excuse to join you.

### How long should a lunch break be?
Whatever your job allows. Even twenty minutes properly away from the desk feels very different from forty minutes half-working.

### Is it fine to use lunch for errands?
Sometimes, of course. Just try not to make it the default, or lunch turns into another to-do list.
