Choose two or three anchors that make your morning better and that you would do even if nobody saw them: a proper coffee at the table, ten minutes outside, a few pages of a book. Fit them around the mornings you really have, with children, commutes and late nights included. A routine that is short, boring and private will outlast any elaborate one built to be admired.

The internet has a very particular idea of a morning routine. It starts before dawn, involves cold water, a journal with a ribbon, a smoothie in a glass jar, a workout, a meditation and a carefully lit cup of something green, all done before most people have found their socks. It is impressive. It is also, for most lives, fiction.

A real morning routine is not a show. It is a few small things that make the start of the day feel like yours.

## Start with the morning you actually have

Before choosing anything, be honest about the raw material. What time do you really get up on a workday? Who else is in the house, and what do they need from you? How long is the commute? Are you a person who wakes slowly or springs out of bed?

A routine built for a theoretical morning collapses on contact with a real one. If you have twenty minutes between the alarm and leaving the house, that is the canvas. Design something that fits it, with room to spare.

## Pick two or three anchors

Anchors are small, repeatable things that make the morning feel good. Not a checklist of improvements, just a few fixed points. Some that work well:

- **Coffee sitting down.** Not standing at the counter, not in the car. A real cup at the table, even for five minutes. This one is very Italian and very underrated.
- **Light and air.** Open the window, step onto the balcony, or walk round the block before the day starts.
- **A short bit of movement.** A few stretches, a walk to the bakery, a cycle to work. Joy, not a training plan.
- **A few pages.** A book with breakfast instead of the news.
- **The same breakfast.** One fewer decision, and something to look forward to.

Two or three is enough. The aim is a morning with a shape, not a morning with a to-do list.

## Cut the theatre

A useful question for anything in a morning routine: would you still do this if nobody ever knew? If the honest answer is no, it is probably there for an audience, even an imaginary one. Drop it.

The same goes for borrowed routines. Someone else's 5 a.m. start, cold shower or journalling method suits them. It may not suit a person who sleeps late and does their best thinking at night. Picking up habits because they look good is how routines become chores.

## Keep the phone at arm's length

The quickest way to lose a morning is to start it in someone else's inbox. A simple rule like "no messages until the coffee is finished" keeps the first part of the day for you. It doesn't need to be a big digital rule; it just needs to protect the anchors. We have more on that in [using your phone less](https://zestasy.com/wiki/using-your-phone-less/).

## Have a minimum version

Some mornings will be chaos: an early train, a sick child, a terrible night. Decide in advance what the smallest version of the routine is. Maybe it is just the coffee sitting down for three minutes. Keeping the minimum on bad days is what makes the routine feel like yours rather than a test you keep failing.

## Let weekends be different

A weekday routine doesn't need to run on Saturday. Weekends are a good place for the slow version: a longer walk, a pastry, the paper, nowhere to be. Having two rhythms is not inconsistency; it's having a life.

## FAQ

### Do you need to get up early for a good routine?
No. A good routine is about how the time feels, not what time it starts. Twenty calm minutes at 8 a.m. beat an exhausted hour at 5.

### How long before a new routine feels natural?
It varies a lot from person to person. Keep it small and expect a few weeks of it feeling deliberate before it feels automatic.

### What if you share mornings with small children?
Then the anchors become shared ones: breakfast together, the walk to school, a song in the car. And perhaps one tiny thing just for you, like the first coffee before anyone else wakes up.

### Should exercise be part of a morning routine?
Only if you like moving in the morning. Some people love it; others are happier at lunchtime or after work. If you are curious, we have a guide on [becoming a morning exerciser](https://zestasy.com/movement/becoming-a-morning-exerciser/).
