# How do you become someone who exercises in the morning?

Make the morning easy and appealing: lay everything out the night before, start with something short enough to be almost silly, and attach a reward you actually look forward to, such as a particular coffee or a walk past the sea. Do it on a few fixed days rather than every day. And if, after a fair trial, mornings still feel like a punishment, move your exercise to a time that suits you.

Morning exercisers have an aura. They mention their 6.45 swim as if it were nothing and arrive at the office with suspiciously bright eyes. If you would like to join them, good news: very little of it is about willpower. Most of it is about decisions you make the evening before.

## Make the morning a downhill slope

At dawn, every small decision is a reason to stay in bed. So remove the decisions.

- **Lay out the kit.** Clothes on the chair, shoes by the door, keys and headphones on top. The full costume, in order.
- **Decide the plan the night before.** Not "maybe a run". Rather: "out of the door, along the canal to the second bridge, back." Specific plans get done; vague ones get negotiated.
- **Prepare the after.** Coffee ready to brew, a towel at the pool bag, breakfast you can assemble in a minute. Knowing the return is pleasant makes the leaving easier.
- **Set the alarm across the room.** Classic for a reason.

## Start smaller than feels reasonable

The first goal is not a workout. It is getting up and going out at that hour. So make it short: a fifteen-minute walk, ten minutes of stretching on the balcony, one loop of the park. Ridiculous in its modesty, and that is the point. Once leaving the house at seven is normal, you can do more with the time.

Pick a few fixed days rather than "every morning". Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday is a pattern you can keep through a busy week. Every day is a pattern you will break by Wednesday and then feel cross about.

## Make it attractive

A morning habit sticks when there is something in it you genuinely want. Some ideas:

- **A destination.** The bakery that opens early, the bar where the barista knows your order, the bench with the view.
- **Company.** A friend who is waiting at the corner is the most reliable alarm ever invented.
- **The light.** Early mornings in summer are their own reward: empty streets, cool air, the city before it puts its make-up on.
- **A small luxury.** The good shower gel. The nice towel. The croissant you only have on run days.
- **Something to listen to** that you save just for these mornings.

## On the morning itself

Don't negotiate in bed. Get up, put on the clothes, and decide whether to go once you are dressed. You will almost always go. If you truly feel rotten, do the shortest version, or skip it and go back to bed without any drama. The habit survives one missed day; it does not survive a week of arguments with yourself.

## Accept it might not suit you

Some people are simply better later in the day. If you have given mornings a fair try, say a few weeks with everything prepared, and they still feel like a chore you dread, that is useful information, not a character flaw. Lunchtime walks, after-work swims and evening runs count exactly as much. The point is to move in a way you enjoy, not to win at waking up.

## FAQ

### What if I have to leave for work very early?
Then keep the morning version tiny, a short walk or a few minutes of mobility at home, and put the longer outing at lunchtime or the weekend. Our page on [movement with a desk job](https://zestasy.com/movement/movement-with-a-desk-job/) has more ideas for fitting it into the working day.

### Should I eat before exercising in the morning?
That depends on you and on what you're doing, and we are not going to issue rules. Some people like a little something first, others prefer to go and then have breakfast. Try both on easy days and notice which you enjoy.

### How do I keep it going in winter?
Lower the bar and add light: shorter outings, reflective layers, routes with street lighting, or an indoor option on the darkest days. We have a whole page on [staying active in winter](https://zestasy.com/movement/staying-active-in-winter/).

### What if my household is asleep?
Lay everything out in another room, get dressed there, and close the door quietly. A considerate morning exerciser is the only kind anyone wants to live with.
